Since EU Regulation 650/2012 (which came into force on 17 August 2015), cross-border inheritances are governed by the law of the deceased's last place of residence, unless expressly chosen otherwise. In practice, a French notary handling an inheritance with a foreign element (a deceased person residing abroad, assets abroad, foreign heirs) will require a certified translation of numerous documents.

Exequatur is the recognition in France of a foreign ruling from outside the EU. For EU rulings, recognition is almost automatic thanks to the Brussels I bis Regulation (1215/2012) in civil and commercial matters, and Brussels II ter (2019/1111) in matrimonial and parental matters.
